The Chapel of Mensija houses a sanctuary cave tied to a well-known local legend. Many centuries ago, a farmer is said to have found a painting of the Virgin Mary in the cave and taken it to the Parish Priest of Birkirkara, as San Ġwann then fell under his care. When the priest tried to present it to the Bishop, the painting repeatedly returned to the cave. Taking this as a sign, the Bishop ordered a chapel to be built on the site, where the painting remains to this day.
