San Ġorġ tal-Belt Victoria
This artistic statue of Saint George the martyr was carved from the trunk of a blackberry tree, known in Maltese as siġra tat tut, by the Valletta born sculptor Pietru Pawl Azzopardi in 1838. Alongside the titular altarpiece by Mattia Preti, the wooden statue of the martyr is among the most treasured possessions of the Victoria Basilica. It is also held in special regard as the first titular statue to be venerated on the island of Gozo.
