In 1724, through the intervention of Grand Master Antonio Manoel De Vilhena, Ħaż-Żebbuġ received a precious relic of its patron saint, a piece from the wrist of his right arm. As devotion grew, the village sought a statue worthy of its protector, commissioning a remarkable silver statue from Rome rather than a papier mache one. Through Mgr Paolo Pullicino, the gifted young artist Luigi Fontana created the unique processional statue, first carried through Żebbuġ’s streets during the feast of May 1864.
